Very few would argue with the statement that video is hot right now. From the cultural phenomenon of YouTube, through to the rise of live streaming services, money is pouring into startups from content creators through to service providers. Getting into video isn’t as easy as setting up a blog, so here’s some advice of which direction to head in.

The basics

Obviously you’ll need a camera to get started in video; if you’re a Mac user you might have a cam built in, but if not web cam’s are fairly cheap. Alternatively people like Chris Pirillo stream from a professional video camera, but even a second hand older model can also work, for both live and recorded shows to computer. For camera effects, CamTwist for the Mac is free and fully featured with effects such as text, clocks, image overlays, Picture in Picture, and much more. Fix8 (our coverage here) offers cartoon style overlays if animation or funny faces are more your thing.

Recording

You’ll have two ways of recording a video: local or to the web. Local could directly on to a camcorder through to Quicktime or something in-between. Quicktime Pro (between $30-$45) does the recording and it’s a quick and easy solution. To the web means recording your video directly to a website; the advantages are that you don’t have to upload it and it’s available immediately, however depending on your internet connection the recording quality can be significantly poorer than recording a video locally and uploading it. YouTube offers the direct recording option and is an obvious candidate, but the Live streaming services also allow you to record to their services and even distribute your video out to sites like YouTube later. I’ve also found that the quality of the live stream services can often be higher in recording than YouTube.

Streaming Live

Live in the newest sector in online video with venture capital being spread around a range of services. Live offers some advantages over doing recorded video alone (although they are not mutually exclusive); streaming live means you can interact with and network with your audience while creating archive footage than can be distributed later. Companies in this space include Justin.tv, Ustream.tv, Mogulus, BlogTV, Stickam and others. All of the services have strengths and weaknesses and you should explore each one, but if you haven’t got time for that I’d recommend Justin.tv or Ustream.tv. Ustream.tv is attracting the professional, higher quality streaming shows so if you want to be in that space, you’ll be well positioned. Their tool set including full video conversion makes for a solid product. Justin.tv has a slant towards a younger, Gen Y audience, and if you’re pitching more to that audience it’s the better place to be. I also found when testing both that Justin.tv was more reliable for streaming quality from outside of the United States, and at times Ustream.tv was unusable for me, even on a 14mb down, 1mb up ADSL2 connection; you wouldn’t experience this in the US however. Of the others, Mogulus has a stronger emphasis on professional video and doesn’t have the strong community yet, BlogTV has a lot of potential, and Stickam seems to be dominated by soft porn, at least when I visited it.

Distribution

I asked Chris Pirillo for some tips for this post and one of his key points was simply: “you must understand that (a) It’s all about YouTube, and (b) It’s all about YouTube.” Like it or not YouTube dominates online video today more than Google dominates search in the United States. Other video bloggers I’ve spoken to suggest distribution to many sites, but always making sure YouTube is top of the list. TubeMogul is one the oldest of the video distribution sites, and is simple to use and free. You upload your video to their servers, enter you user name and password for a list of sites (first time only) then press the button and off they go. TubeMogul also tracks traffic statistics from each site so you can see which videos are being watched there. An alternative service is Hey!Spread (our review here).

The other consideration in distribution is getting your video onto other devices, like iPods. The key is to provide the correct file type and feed for services such as iTunes. You can do it manually with a WordPress plugin and by making sure the file is available on your server in the correct format, or you can use Blip.tv.

We’ve covered the occasional content deal on Blip.tv but we’ve never seriously looked at their distribution platform, and it’s the reason shows like Rocketboom, Mahalo Daily and Moblogic are using Blip.tv. On top of the obvious video hosting everyone in this space provides, Blip.tv also offers distribution to external blogs (including an automatic option), the Internet Archive, de.licio.us (links), Flickr (pics from the video), Adobe Media Player, MySpace, Twitter (text alerts), Facebook, Yahoo Video, AOL Video, Akimbo, Lycos Mix, MeeVee, MeFeedia, Meebo, Blinkx, Splashcast, Pando and the most important one of all: iTunes. Blip.tv offers an iTunes subscription feed and file conversion service; users do have to manually go to the dashboard within Blip.tv and request the file conversion on a free account, but with a premium account ($8/ mth or $80/ yr) get the conversion done automatically. A premium account also has other benefits, such as priority file transcoding that in my testing made it the quickest service available (that is time from when the video was uploaded until it was ready to view).

There was an argument between Ze Frank and Rocketboom a year or two back where Ze Frank disputed Rocketboom’s viewer numbers as they were reporting 10x the traffic of Ze’s The Show. The key to Rocketboom’s success has always been distribution, and for a long time you couldn’t open a media player without seeing Rocketboom pre-loaded. Distribution is key, and combining services like TubeMogul and Blip.tv make it a lot easier.

Content

Chris Pirillo told me that the key is to make sure every video has something different, and that you should use supportive text with each video posted as Google loves text. Ultimately what you decide to create is up to you: it may be something simple like a web cam chat, or you may want to get more creative. We cant tell you what will work for you, but the easiest way to start is to get on YouTube and just see what different people are doing, you’re sure to find something to inspire you.

Loic Le Meur’s video chat service Seesmic is announcing tonight that it has acquired leading 3rd party Twitter client Twhirl. Seesmic is still in closed Alpha status right now – though we have invites if you’d like them: email marshall@readwriteweb.com with the word Seesmic in the subject line and we’ll send you one.

How could the acquisition of an app that runs entirely on the Twitter API, by another service that isn’t even publicly available yet be a big deal? Let us count the ways…

Seesmic gets Twhirl’s fast growing userbase, cross platform desktop AIR envrionment and its very capable developer. Marco Kaiser, creator of Twhirl, gets a job, presumably cash and stock in Seesmic, plus access to Seesmic’s high-profile funding and Loic Lemur’s catchet. It could have been Snitter or it could have been Twitterrific, but Twhirl has the momentum among 3rd party Twitter clients and that’s who moved first.

Twhirl even got on Fox News this week. They didn’t spell its name right, but the point is that Twitter is creeping into the mainstream and Twhirl is the best way to use Twitter.

Here’s Seesmic CEO Loic Le Meur talking about the deal, followed by our analysis of the technology implications.

XMPP

Seesmic runs on XMPP/Jabber, the protocol that provides the immediate communication and presence awareness of many Instant Messenging clients. You know how nice, smooth and in-touch IM is. Once any of your internet communication experiences goes on in that kind of environment – you don’t ever want to go back again. At the very least, it’s a game changing option to have along with asynchronous forms of communication.

Surprisingly, it’s the video half of this deal that supports XMPP now, not the Twitter half.

We wrote in January about XMPP powering the future of online communication. Twitter supports XMPP messenging but only native IM clients like Google Talk seem to have integrated it so far. Seesmic plus Twhirl, powered by XMPP is going to be hot. Instant text and video communication and presence status.

Video + Microblogging = Rich User Experience

The video experience of Seesmic is hard to explain until you’ve tried it. It’s a lot more than just “Twitter for video.” (See our post “Seesmic Transcends Comparisons With Twitter“) Those differences are going to soften now, though. A combined service will offer a continum of communication depending on your broadcasting comfort and time to consume inbound messages. Text is what the vast majority of people prefer to produce, but video is incredibly compelling to consume.

Lifestreaming

How long until even more services are rolled into this new dynamo? Seesmic already integrates outbound publishing with YouTube, Qik and Twitter. How long until the company rolls out lifestreaming capabilities ala FriendFeed, displaying recent user and aggregate-friend activity on any number of other services – then storming the Facebook Newsfeed as a packaged solution to the 3rd party RSS feed dilemma there? Probably not very long. FriendFeed is already inching towards the Newsfeed, literally, by getting into the Minifeed on Facebook. Every social network wants to act as the central location for user activity around the web, but it’s far less trivial than just letting users plug in RSS feeds or usernames. Lifestreaming apps are making this a service, FriendFeed is the leader today, but somehow this functionality is a logical thing to come to Seesmic/Twhirl next.

Seesmic won’t be able to work too closely with anything more than the recently launched FriendFeed API because that service, for all its nimbleness risks holding out for an unrealistically large acquisition more than it risks anything else.

There’s no shortage of lifestreaming apps that the company could work with, though.

AIR – Cross Platform RIA

The best thing about Twhirl is that it’s built in Adobe AIR. While Microsoft’s Silverlight is coming on hard and fast, the AIR/Flex/Flash ecosystem is made for hotness and has the most momentum in the grassroots developer community.

AIR lets developers write in HTML, Javascript and Flash – but run it on the desktop – of a Windows, Mac or Linux computer. These are Rich Internet Applications – apps that sit on the desktop and function outside the browser, but that are tied to the web and leverage connectivity as well. Check out Redmonk’s RIA Weekly Podcast if you want to get excited about RIAs on a regular basis.

The Future

The second multimedia communication service built on AIR that gets acquired is going to go for a much higher price than we can presume this first one did, especially if it comes into the deal with XMPP of its own. Throw in integration of the new UStream API for live streaming video and you’ve got the kind of platform that Skype could have become if it hadn’t hit the swamp of mega-acquisition. Twhirl and Seesmic together have many of the traits that countless other companies are looking for, now.

Seesmic plus Twhirl is of course just two very forward-looking organizations in a large, diverse economy of innovation. Look at this deal though and you’ll see a big part of the future of online communication technology, no matter who it is that makes it happen.

随着大选年中新一届美国总统即将诞生，现在是讨论下一届美国总统对于IT应该做什么的时候了（无论谁在大选中获胜）。下面是业界人士认为下一届美国总统应该对IT做的十件事情。 1.推出大规模保留IT员工的计划 各地的雇主都在抱怨缺少拥有他们需要的技能的IT员工。有大量的IT员工，只是大多数IT员工的技能都过时了，需要更新。 2.创建激励机制雇佣老的IT员工 美国技术人才短缺的秘密是在雇主中普遍存在年龄歧视问题。他们不愿意雇用年老的员工。他们担心这些老员工经历了多次经济衰退之后会有不好的态度。 3.制定一个合理的签证计划 移民使美国成为了一个强大的国家，为美国提供了非常有积极性的工人。我们需要世界提供最有技能的员工，但是，我们要在不人为地限制美国公民的机会的情况下实现上述目的。 4.制定一个数据中心节能政策 大型数据中心会消耗更多的电源和释放更多的碳。我们需要提供一个激励机制，让企业把数据中心基础设施升级到更节能的系统。这不仅有利于环境，而且还有利于业务。IT设备占美国资本开支的50%。 5.建立一个应用统一通讯的激励机制 大多数大城市的道路交通都非常拥挤。如果我们为人们提供一些工具，让人们在家里使用统一通讯工具更有效率地进行工作，每天早上和晚上在路上的人数就会减少。 6.推动视频会议应用 空中交通管制比较混乱因为有许多商人乘坐的小型飞机聚集在跑道上。这些商人的大多数业务都可以在高清晰度视频会议系统上完成。 7.消除Sarbanes-Oxley法案的混乱 企业经营更透明是一件好事。但是，由于对经营状况有许多可能的解释，这些法规让审计人员陷入了许多没有意义的琐事之中，浪费了时间和效率。我们需要一个蓝带委员会消除这种混乱。 8.推动健康医疗IT改革法案 简单的事实是我们称作混乱的健康医疗IT实际上将增加成本和降低健康医疗的质量。我们已经开始了这个行动提出了隐私和可携带法规，但是，我们现在需要强制执行一些真正的兼容性标准，让所有的患者信息都是可访问的和有用的。 9. 制定数据可携带规定 应该允许人们离开Facebook或者MySpace等网站并且带走自己的全部个人数据。人们不应该花几个小时的时间与客户支持人员讨论如何携带自己的数据的复杂过程。这个过程实际上阻碍人们携带自己的数据。要决定哪一个机构拥有你的许可能够访问你的个人数据和拥有不可分割的权限。 10.学习实际使用网络 你可以对于你一无所知的事情制定一个政策，因为你实际上要做的事情是有一个助手帮助你查找一些东西和把这些东西打印出来。 addthis_url = 'http%3A%2F%2Fhansvirus.com%2Farchives%2F124%2F'; addthis_title = '%E4%B8%8B%E4%B8%80%E5%B1%8A%E7%BE%8E%E5%9B%BD%E6%80%BB%E7%BB%9F%E5%BA%94%E8%AF%A5%E5%AF%B9IT%E5%81%9A%E7%9A%84%E5%8D%81%E4%BB%B6%E4%BA%8B%E6%83%85'; addthis_pub = '';

14．Technorati

15．TripIt

16．Twitter

17．WordPress

18．YouTube
